Best of all, each song was a potential sleeper hit in its own right, from kidnapping fable "Abducted" to break-up back-and-forth "Bumper". Bass music continued to mutate in a million different directions in 2011- perhaps the surest sign of its unpredictability is the fact that no one has come up with a better term than "bass music" to describe the broader spectrum of dubstep and its discontents. No album better captured this world's sense of possibility than the self-titled debut album from SBTRKT, a journeyman producer and remixer who found his voice by combining lithe grooves grounded in dubstep, garage, and UK funky with economical pop melodies.

The Best Albums of 2011. Publish Date: December 30, 2011. 88 Bad As Me by Tom Waits. However good Bad As Me might be, it is actually our lowest-scoring album of the year, ever (going back to 2000). And, overall in 2011, a total of 95 out of 863 albums-or about 11%-received universal acclaim from critics (with a Metascore of 81 or greater). That's down from 1. % the year before, though still better than the 9% mark in 2009. And only one new album met or exceeded the 90 mark this year, compared to four in 2010.

On his best album in more than 20 years, Simon fuses the worldhugging bounce of Graceland with the conversational elegance and attention to detail that's served him for 50 years. He's the only guy who can sing a line like "The CAT scan's eye sees what the heart's concealing," over Indian percussion, and have it roll out as smooth as doo-wop. The most anticipated event-album of 2011 was a sound-the-trumpets supergroup record of a magnitude scarcely seen. What could have been a crash-and-burn anticlimax turned out to be as fun as any record in a dog's age. From the cinematic "No Church in the Wild" to the Stax-soul update "Otis," Throne testifies to Kanye West's genius for beats both iconoclastic and pop-savvy.

From Taylor Swift's attempt to dupe the New York Times with 'Reputation' or the many memes birthed by Kendrick Lamar's instantly-viral 'DAMN. ' the album covers we've seen in 2017 are just as memorable as the music behind them. Below, check out the album art that struck us the most this year - for better, or for worse.

SuchThaus is a band created by a sculptor and stage designer who calls himself Spacebrain, along with a collaborator who goes by Fruen, and they’re joined by a shifting group of guests. The latest release is a debut album named The Dark Side and the Bright Side, which appeared in December 2011 on RollAbigone Records. One of the songs on that album - DownTown Train - includes two notable guests: vocalist Maniac, who was a founding member of Mayhem and is now in Skitliv, and one of the best drummers in metal, Mayhem’s Hellhammer.

More on the best culture of 2017. 1. St Vincent – Masseduction. A kind of teasing irony is detectable on Masseduction, a musical striptease on which Annie Clark – who performs as St Vincent – exposes herself on her own terms. Staples takes this kind of combination to great heights on the album, which climaxes with the staggeringly brilliant Yeah Right, on which tinny trap entwines with bizarre pop parody by producer Sophie (listen for a guest spot by Kendrick Lamar). Genre-blendin. ince Staples.

2017 really was the year of Ed Sheeran, with ÷ finishing as the year’s best-selling album. A big album that missed the Top 5 on the Official Albums Chart is the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Moana at Number 12, one slot ahead of Take That’s eighth album Wonderland (13), which scored the highest opening first week sales of any album not to hit Number 1 in 2017, peaking at Number 2 with 113,000 combined.
